Overview

As an event organizer and residence staff, I constantly saw students missing out on events simply because campus events were all over the place- Instagram pages, random group chats, and websites no one checked. It was hard for students to feel connected when everything felt so scattered.

I led the end-to-end design and front-end development, overseeing product scoping, user research, prototyping, and usability testing.

Problem

Students at Laurier struggle to keep up with campus events because information is fragmented, overwhelming, and easy to miss.

Students at Laurier struggle to keep up with campus events because information is fragmented, overwhelming, and easy to miss.

Event information was siloed, scattered across multiple platforms, and difficult to find. Even when students did come across events, there was no easy way to track or save them, leading to low engagement.

Without a centralized digital and personalized event hub, students were left frustrated, disconnected, and out of the loop.

Why the Current System Isn’t Working efficiently?

Poster Fatigue

Overcrowded and visually overwhelming—too many posters in one place meant students either skimmed past them or didn’t absorb the information.

Instagram Limitations

Posts are scattered across multiple club, faculty, and department-run accounts, students also need to actively be on social media to see events while scrolling.

Email Communication Inefficiency

Events are buried in long emails, which students either ignored, overlooked, or forgot about.

Multiple Laurier’s Official Event Sites

Instead of one central hub, students had to check three separate websites to find event listings. The platforms were outdated, difficult to navigate, and lacked real-time updates, leading to low engagement.

Design System

To ensure consistency and efficiency in the HawkStop app, I developed a custom design system inspired by Uber's minimalist aesthetic. Utilizing a monochromatic palette of black, white, and gray, the system emphasizes clarity and accessibility.

Exploring the Competition

Before designing HawkStop, I analyzed several existing event platforms to understand what students were already using to stay involved and engaged, what worked, and more importantly, what didn’t.

Research

Survey Insights from 50+ students

To ensure HawkStop meets the needs of Laurier students, I conducted a survey to understand their engagement with extracurricular activities, awareness of existing platforms, and interest in an app for managing all events to resolved the siloed event sites.

Key insights

  • Usage of Existing Tools: 70% of respondents had never used any apps or websites to stay updated on events.

  • Awareness of "The Nest": 55% of students were aware of the existing "The Nest" app, but many expressed dissatisfaction with its user experience, with 60% rating it as neutral or dissatisfied.
